Cut, Copy & Paste
Excerpts for the MIDI Sequencing - Made Easy Book
Cut, Copy & Paste
One of the most useful features of a MIDI sequencing package is the ability to cut, copy & paste your work, similar to a word processor. We can duplicate any MIDI information at all which saves having to re-input a verse or chorus for example; simply take what we have already, and recycle it!
Before we Cut or Copy we must Select the section first.
• Place the cursor high into the ruler section (where the bar markers are) above the
blocks of notes. You should notice that the cursor changes into a pencil when placed
high into the ruler.

• Drag the pencil to create a blue line which indicates the start and finish points of the
section you wish to select. Cubase calls this the Loop.
• Now, right click anywhere in the loop and select Edit > Split Loop. Your selection has
now been split from the rest of the rest of the sequence so that it can be manipulated
on its own.
• Now, right click anywhere in the loop and choose Select > In Loop. Your selection is
now highlighted..
Cut or Copy
Cutting removes the selected section from the sequence; Copying makes a duplicate and leaves the original intact. Both Cut and Copy functions store the selection in the computers memory so that you can paste them elsewhere.
• Go to the Edit menu at the top of the window and select
o Cut (or hit [Ctrl] X) or
o Copy (or hit [Ctrl] C)
Pasting
These are 4 very useful types of pasting in Cubase. They are all very similar but have slightly different applications.
• Duplicating – copying a section of music and pasting it straight afterwards.
• Repeating – copying a section of music and pasting it straight afterwards a number
of times.
• Pasting to another point - cutting or copying a section of music and pasting it at
another point in the sequence.
• Fast Copy & Paste – uses the [Alt] key to drag a copy of a selected section/s to a
new location.
Duplicating
• Copy your selection as described above.
• Right click in the loop and select Edit > Duplicate. Your selection now Pastes itself immediately afterwards.
