Excerpts for the MIDI Sequencing - Made Easy Book

MIDI Sequencing Tutoral

A Quick Tour of Cubase LE

The blocks of notes in the Arrange Window.

Arrange Window

The song that has loaded is a completed MIDI sequence containing examples of almost all the features and editing techniques described in this book. The main screen (shown above) is the Arrange Window, and is the main view where we spend a lot of our time with Cubase. The coloured blocks in the Arrange Window are where the notes are. They can be highlighted, dragged and dropped, deleted, transposed, cut, copied, pasted and all sorts from this window.

When you hit Play on the transport bar the song will play to you. Notice how each coloured bar in the arrange window shows you where and when the notes come in.

If you can’t hear anything, Cubase might not be playing to your MIDI device. Go to the Inspector column on the left & hold your Left mouse button on the ‘out’ menu. This will show you all the available MIDI devices on your computer.

NEXT Hold down [Ctrl] on the keyboard and select one of the output devices, this changes all your tracks to the same output device. If you have a few output devices listed here, you might have to experiment until you get one that works!

Summary:
You should now be familiar with all the major functions of Cubase LE
(like the arrange window, transport bar, toolbar, track list, tempo track etc.),
the use of the editors, the importance of the setup parameters at bar 1,
how to use cut, copy & paste and how to use the controls and change the
parameters to alter the sequence.
